Poetry Prompts Day 14 - If I Were Me

Whether writing or in a relationship, the most important thing is to be yourself. I personally have a hard time hanging on to that. I am a chameleon and tend to lose myself as I mold myself around what other people want and expect. It isn't a conscious thing. Somewhere along the way I suddenly see that I am not me anymore, and have to figure out how to get back to me again. In this relationship I'm trying to stay more aware, but I still find myself slipping away on occasion. It is a struggle and I'm holding onto me as hard as I can.

Poetry Prompt:

Ask yourself, "If I were me..." what would that look like? Who are you really? Have you lost yourself in being a mother, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, father?

Suggested Poetry Form: Shape Poetry  This form can be fun to play with. I suggest free writing and then playing with the shape of them after.

Word Prompts:

Being yourself
authentic
lost
found
truly me

Please explore poetry without rules, but don't try to fix anyone. Some of us love to explore the darker side and we just want to be heard. If the words you read touch you in some way, share what you love about the poem, what speaks to you, what makes you feel deep in your bones, but no giving advice or words of wisdom. That isn't what this is about.

Remember, our prompts are only suggestions, you can find your inspiration wherever your muse leads you. Please visit the other participants, share the hashtag, #OctPoWriMo on social media, and share your link in the comments below. Let us know how this journey into poetry is going for you.

  8. How suprised I was when today's prompt took me in a positive direction! https://unassortedstories.wordpress.com/2018/10/14/if-i-were-me/ I don't think it's very poetic, but I do like its message.

  10. The shape is like nothing I've ever seen. Maybe the poem is like something I've never written. lol

    2. It's a shape as unique as your poem, and I love the way you've spaced the definitions and what is, and what is not.

  11. This was a fun form to attempt. Shape poetry can be fun but also extremely irritating. Experienced both while coming up with today's effort

    1. Oh *nicely* done dagger! It fits the theme so well too. I hear you there - irritating is a mild word for it.

  12. I like shaped poems, but they can be amazingly irritating and patience-testing. I also have no patience to shape it on the computer so I did it the only way I know how: via hand-lettering. It's not great (poem or shape) but it's the best I got today.

  16. This one didn't inspire anything specific to it, either. So, as a result, I went in another direction. The poem below was actually written for the prompt of "insecurity" but didn't fit in the slightest. It somewhat fits today's, though.

Title: "The Autopsy of John Doe"

  19. this is my first time ever, an attempt at shape poetry... so I chose a easy shape PEN,,, yet a powerful one …most powerful weapon for the betterment of humanity...

    PEN

    I
    me
    you
    every
    anyone
    I write about
    write on paper
    ink drains on paper
    words flow on to paper

    pen moves on the paper
thoughts as of who am I
thoughts of as how am I
I am what my thought is
    thought as purity check
    purity as in its intent
    thoughts are into action
    Actions made into habits
    Habits fall into culture

    cultures make communities

    communities are humanity
    humanity is our creation

    thought moves the creation
    thought, action and reaction
    tremendous impact on creation
    it impacts the internal world
    it impacts the external world
destiny is written by the pen
the pen that puts the thought

    down
